Washington: In the latest Wall Street Journal poll, Donald Trump holds a narrow lead over Kamala Harris in the race for the U.S. presidency. Trump garners 49% of the vote compared to Harris’s 47%. However, this lead falls within the poll’s margin of error, which is ±3.1 percentage points.
The poll highlights a recent boost in support for Harris, especially among non-white voters, and a notable rise in Democratic enthusiasm for her campaign. Previously, Trump had a six-point lead over President Joe Biden, who has since withdrawn from the race and endorsed Harris.
When independent and third-party candidates like Robert F. Kennedy Jr. were included, Harris secured 45% of the vote, slightly ahead of Trump, who received 44%. Kennedy attracted 4% of respondents, with 5% remaining undecided.
Harris’s favorability rating has improved to 46%, her highest in this election cycle, although 52% view her unfavorably. In contrast, Trump is perceived as more capable in managing immigration, the economy, foreign relations, and crime. However, Harris leads Trump 51% to 33% on handling abortion issues.
Regarding age and temperament, 48% of respondents believe Trump, at 78, is too old to serve as President, while only 2% have concerns about the 59-year-old Harris. Additionally, 46% think Harris has the right temperament for the presidency, compared to 38% for Trump.
The poll also reveals that many voters are still becoming familiar with potential vice-presidential candidates being considered by Harris, who is expected to announce her pick by August 7 to meet her party’s virtual nomination deadline.
Conducted by Bocian of GBAO and Lee of Fabrizio Lee, the Wall Street Journal poll surveyed 1,000 registered voters from July 23-25.
