Srinagar: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday praised the record voter turnout in the first phase of the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections, celebrating it as a symbol of change in the region. Modi pointed out that the youth of Jammu and Kashmir, once notorious for throwing stones at security personnel, now carry books and pens, embracing education and progress.

The first phase of voting saw a 60.21% voter turnout, the highest in the past seven elections. Modi attributed this milestone to the faith that the people of J&K have in the development and peace brought under his government.

Condemning Political Dynasties

In his address, PM Modi took a swipe at the National Conference, People’s Democratic Party (PDP), and Congress, accusing them of prioritizing their personal gains over the well-being of the Kashmiri people. He also highlighted how the self-serving politics of these three dynasties led to the displacement of Kashmiri Pandits from their homes, stripping the region of its cultural roots.

Modi also shed light on the suffering endured by Sikh families in Kashmir, who, like Kashmiri Pandits, faced years of violence and atrocities. He argued that the actions of these political families contributed to the displacement and hardships faced by both the Hindu and Sikh communities.

Lal Chowk’s Transformation

Reflecting on Srinagar’s Lal Chowk, once seen as a symbol of danger for those wanting to raise the tricolour flag, Modi said that the situation has changed dramatically. The area, once a no-go zone, is now bustling with life and vibrant celebrations, showcasing communal harmony during both Eid and Diwali.

Taking a veiled dig at former Union Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde, PM Modi referred to Shinde’s earlier remarks where he expressed fear about moving around freely in Kashmir. Modi countered this by highlighting the peaceful and celebratory atmosphere that now defines the region, signalling the success of his administration in restoring peace and normalcy.
