Mumbai: Sanjay Raut, Rajya Sabha MP and leader of Shiv Sena (UBT), has been sentenced to 15 days in jail after being convicted in a defamation case filed by Dr Medha Somaiya, wife of BJP leader Kirit Somaiya. The Metropolitan Magistrate in Mazgaon, Mumbai, also imposed a ₹25,000 fine on Raut.

Dr Medha Somaiya lodged a complaint accusing Raut of making baseless and defamatory statements to the media, alleging that she and her husband were involved in a ₹100 crore scam related to the construction and maintenance of public toilets in Mira Bhayandar.

“The Court ordered 15-day imprisonment for Sanjay Raut and imposed a fine of ₹25,000 on him,” said Vivekanand Gupta, advocate for Dr Medha Somaiya. The complaint claimed that Raut’s statements were intended to malign her character in the public eye.
