Ranchi: The Jharkhand Police has issued a warning to the general public regarding rising incidents of parcel scams, urging people to stay alert and safeguard themselves from cyber fraud. In a recent advisory, the police have asked citizens to avoid paying unexpected charges or sharing personal information for parcels they were not expecting.

Cybercriminals Using New Tactics for Fraud

With the increasing use of technology, cybercriminals are coming up with new ways to deceive people. Over the past few years, cybercrime cases have surged, and parcel scams have become a common method of fraud. Cybercriminals are exploiting courier services and their networks without informing the companies or delivery personnel.

What is a Parcel Scam?

In parcel scams, criminals steal user information from the parcels dispatched by courier companies. When users discard parcel packaging without erasing their personal details, cybercriminals retrieve this information. Sometimes, fraudsters also steal data through courier or e-commerce companies, which gives them access to personal details. Using this stolen information, scammers impersonate courier companies or delivery personnel to call victims and trick them into revealing banking details under false pretenses.

Tips to Avoid Parcel Scams

  • Keep details of your online orders private and share with as few people as possible.
  • Never share your order details with unknown individuals.
  • After receiving a parcel, do not dispose of the packaging carelessly. Make sure to erase any personal information printed on the package before discarding it.
  • If someone claiming to be from a courier company or acting as a delivery person asks for your banking details, be alert and avoid sharing any sensitive information.

By following these precautions, you can protect yourself from falling victim to cybercriminals posing as delivery agents or couriers.
