New York: As tensions rise between Israel and Iran, speculation continues about whether Israel will target Iran’s nuclear facilities in retaliation for the Iranian missile strikes earlier this week. A senior US State Department official, speaking to CNN on Friday, indicated that it remains uncertain if Israel will take such a step.
“It’s really hard to tell,” the official said when asked about Israel’s intentions regarding Iran’s nuclear sites. “We hope and expect to see some wisdom as well as strength, but as you guys know, no guarantees,” they added, leaving Israel’s plans shrouded in ambiguity.
Iran’s Missile Barrage and US Response
Earlier this week, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) launched 181 ballistic missiles at Israel, targeting military bases near Tel Aviv. The attack triggered nationwide air raid sirens and sent millions of Israelis into bomb shelters. While most missiles were intercepted, some caused injuries and damage, including the death of a Palestinian civilian in Jericho.
Following the missile attack, US officials reiterated their support for Israel’s right to defend itself. “There must be consequences for Iran for this attack,” said Matthew Miller, Spokesperson for the US Department of State, during a press briefing.
Biden Opposes Strikes on Iran’s Nuclear Facilities
Despite the escalating tensions, President Joe Biden expressed opposition to the idea of Israel targeting Iran’s nuclear facilities. “If I were in their shoes, I’d be thinking about other alternatives than striking oil fields,” Biden remarked during a press briefing, hinting at the potential consequences of such an action.
As the situation unfolds, Israel’s response remains unclear, but US officials have made it known that Iran will face repercussions for the missile attack.
