Ranchi: Hearing a petition regarding the demand for service extension of contract workers, the Jharkhand High Court orally remarked that no individual should be kept on low wages for an extended period. The court stated that the government cannot exploit contract workers and must consider regular appointments for such positions if the work continues. The court highlighted that the state has been engaging various contract workers at the panchayat level, and if these positions are to remain in the future, regular appointments should be made. The court has issued a notice to the government, directing it to file a response.
Appeal Filed Against Single Bench’s Order
The appeal was filed against a single bench order of the High Court, which had ruled that contract workers could not benefit from service extension. The case, filed by Aita Oraon and 158 others, is now being heard by a bench led by the Chief Justice and Justice Deepak Roshan. Senior advocates Ajit Kumar and Aparajita Bhardwaj represented the petitioners in court.
