New Delhi: The Supreme Court has dismissed the bail application of former Janata Dal (Secular) MP Prajwal Revanna, who is accused in cases related to multiple sexual assaults. The case gained national attention following the leak of explicit videos in April 2024, just before the second phase of the Karnataka Lok Sabha elections.

Revanna, charged under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, including Section 376 (rape), sexual harassment, and voyeurism, had sought bail from the apex court. Senior Advocate Mukul Rohatgi, representing Revanna, argued that the initial complaint did not explicitly mention Section 376. However, the bench, comprising Justices Bela M Trivedi and Satish Chandra Sharma, took note of the gravity of the charges and rejected the petition.

The Karnataka High Court had earlier denied Revanna’s bail request in October 2024. The former MP, 33, faces serious allegations of repeated sexual assault and intimidation.

Timeline of the Case

Revanna was arrested on May 31 by Karnataka Police at Bengaluru’s Kempegowda International Airport upon his return from Germany. He had departed for Germany on April 27, a day after polling in the Hassan constituency. This move followed the issuance of a ‘Blue Corner Notice’ by Interpol, requested by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) through the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). The arrest warrant was issued by a Special Court for Elected Representatives on May 18 after the SIT’s application.

The allegations stem from a case registered on April 28 in Holenarasipura, Hassan district, where Revanna was implicated in three cases of sexual assault. The scandal came to light when pen drives containing explicit videos, allegedly involving Revanna, began circulating in Hassan on April 23, just three days before the Lok Sabha polls in the area.

In response to the allegations, the JD(S) suspended Revanna from the party in April 2024, distancing itself from the controversy.
