Imphal: Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh issued a heartfelt apology to the people of the state on Tuesday for the ethnic clashes that have plagued the northeastern region since May last year. The Chief Minister expressed optimism for peace and harmony in 2025 while acknowledging the pain and loss endured by the communities.

“This entire year has been very unfortunate. I want to say sorry to the people of the state for what’s happening till today since last May 3. Many people lost their loved ones. Many people left their homes. I feel regret. I apologise,” said Mr. Singh during his statement.

Hope for Peace

The Chief Minister pointed to the progress in the last three to four months as a sign of hope, saying, “I believe by 2025, the normalcy will be restored in the state.”

He called upon all communities in Manipur to move forward, urging, “Whatever happened has happened. You have to forgive and forget the past mistakes and we have to start a new life (towards) a peaceful and prosperous Manipur.”

Ethnic Clashes in Manipur

The ethnic violence, which began on May 3 last year, has claimed over 180 lives. The conflict erupted over the Meitei community’s demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status and the tribal Kukis’ opposition to this demand.

The Meiteis, constituting about 53% of Manipur’s population, reside mainly in the Imphal Valley, while tribals, including Nagas and Kukis, form 40% of the population and inhabit the hill regions.

Mr. Singh emphasized the importance of unity among the 35 tribes in Manipur, stating that harmony is the key to a peaceful coexistence.
