New Delhi: India has strongly condemned an incident of firing by the Sri Lankan Navy that injured five Indian fishermen near Delft Island early Tuesday morning. The Ministry of External Affairs summoned Sri Lanka’s acting high commissioner in New Delhi to express its displeasure over the incident, calling the use of force unacceptable.

Of the 13 fishermen onboard the vessel, two sustained serious injuries and are being treated at Jaffna Teaching Hospital, while three others with minor injuries have received medical attention. Indian consulate officials in Jaffna have visited the injured fishermen and are providing assistance to them and their families.

India’s Response

India reiterated its long-standing policy of addressing fishermen-related issues in a humane and humanitarian manner, emphasizing livelihood concerns. The foreign ministry asserted, “The use of force is not acceptable under any circumstances. Existing agreements between the two governments must be strictly adhered to.”

Sri Lanka’s Statement

In response, the Sri Lankan government termed the incident as “accidental firing,” claiming it occurred after Indian fishermen allegedly attempted to assault naval personnel and seize a firearm. According to Sri Lanka, the Indian fishing boat had been maneuvering aggressively and refusing to comply with lawful orders.

Sri Lanka’s Navy stated that the incident took place while they were conducting a boarding operation on the fishing boat. A complaint has been lodged with the Kankesanthurai Police.

A Long-Standing Issue

The fishermen issue has been a contentious aspect of India-Sri Lanka relations, with multiple incidents of firing and seizure of Indian fishing boats in the Palk Strait, a narrow waterway separating Tamil Nadu from Sri Lanka. This region, a rich fishing ground, often sees disputes over alleged illegal entry into Sri Lankan waters.

India continues to advocate for peaceful resolutions, urging Sri Lanka to approach these matters with sensitivity and mutual respect.
