Government Response & Drug Supply Assurance
Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, who chaired a District Planning Committee meeting in Pune, directed strict action against hospitals found overcharging GBS patients. He also instructed health officials to ensure an adequate supply of medicines to treat the condition.
Possible Cause: Contaminated Water
Health officials suspect that the GBS outbreak in Pune and surrounding areas is linked to contaminated water sources. The Campylobacter jejuni bacteria, commonly found in contaminated food and water, is believed to be the primary cause of the outbreak.
Authorities are now focusing on water quality checks and public health measures to contain the spread of this rare but serious disorder, which causes sudden numbness and muscle weakness.
