New Delhi: A 31-year-old software engineer, Vinay Gupta, was allegedly beaten and strangled to death by his wife’s family members at his Delhi home following a domestic dispute, with the victim’s family accusing his wife Rekha and six to seven others of carrying out the attack.
Dispute Over Child’s Medicine Escalates into Violence
Vinay, employed as a software engineer with Adobe in Noida with an annual package of around Rs 60 lakh, was married to Rekha, a homemaker, roughly three and a half years ago, and the couple had twin children. According to Vinay’s mother, an argument broke out between the couple over administering medicine to one of their children, after which Rekha grew upset when Vinay raised his voice, left the house, and returned about ten minutes later with members of her parental family, including her two brothers, a sister-in-law, her father, an uncle and another individual.
Family Alleges Attack Took Place Inside the House
The victim’s family alleged that while Vinay’s mother had stepped away to arrange water and refreshments for the visitors, the group assaulted Vinay inside the house, repeatedly beating him, strangling him, and striking him on the chest with their hands and feet. Vinay had reportedly brought water for his in-laws just before the attack began. His parents attempted to intervene, but the assault continued.
Family Alleges Attack Was Pre-Planned, CCTV Switched Off
The family alleged that the attack was premeditated and that Rekha had switched off the CCTV cameras at the house before it occurred. Reported footage allegedly shows Rekha in a red suit and her sister-in-law in a blue suit, while two of Rekha’s brothers, her father and another man were allegedly seen waiting in a car outside. Following the assault, a neighbour was seen carrying Vinay outside, and after helping him sit down, took him to a hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
Family Cites History of Tension Between Vinay and In-Laws
Vinay’s family further alleged that he had been given separate living space on the third floor of the house, where he stayed with his parents while his wife prepared meals separately, claiming that Rekha frequently argued with Vinay’s mother and that one of her brothers had previously threatened to kill Vinay over minor disagreements. Vinay’s father said the couple had faced ongoing disputes over small issues, which the family had hoped to resolve through conversation, but the situation ultimately escalated into violence.
Four Arrested, Case Registered Under BNS
Police have arrested four individuals in connection with the incident, including Vinay’s wife Rekha, her two brothers, and one other accused. A forensic team collected evidence from the scene, and a case has been registered under Sections 103(1) and 103(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Police are continuing to investigate the circumstances of the death and the role of each accused.
