Moscow: Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump are set to hold a critical phone conversation today, focusing on efforts to end the three-year war in Ukraine.
While Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov previously announced the call would take place between 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. ET (1300 GMT to 1500 GMT), Putin brushed off the timing speculation, jokingly saying, “Don’t listen to him. His job is to talk.” The comment was made while addressing a gathering of Russian oligarchs.
Putin’s New Condition Before Ceasefire Talks
Ahead of the discussions, Putin has introduced a fresh demand—he insists that all arms deliveries to Ukraine from the US and Europe must be halted during the proposed 30-day ceasefire. According to Bloomberg News, the Kremlin’s priority is to block US military aid to Ukraine, although Putin ultimately seeks an end to Western arms supplies altogether.
Trump’s Stand on the Ukraine Conflict
On Monday, US President Donald Trump confirmed his plans to engage with Putin regarding the ceasefire. “We want to see if we can bring that war to an end. Maybe we can, maybe we can’t, but I think we have a very good chance,”Trump told reporters.
His remarks followed Moscow’s demand for “ironclad” guarantees that NATO will exclude Ukraine from membership and that Kyiv will remain neutral.
Ceasefire Deal and Negotiation Stalemate
The US-backed 30-day ceasefire plan has been accepted by Ukraine, with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy agreeing to the truce. Moscow, on the other hand, has agreed to the deal “in principle” but remains firm on its additional conditions before signing any final agreement.
With both leaders set to engage in direct talks, the future of US-Russia relations and the Ukraine war could witness a major turning point.
