New Delhi: Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge wrote a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday, demanding that an all-party meeting be convened to discuss the government’s proposals on delimitation, allowing political parties an opportunity to deliberate on the matter.
Kharge Seeks Freeze on Lok Sabha Seat Numbers for 25 Years
In his letter, the Congress president also demanded that the current strength of 543 Lok Sabha seats remain unchanged for the next 25 years, while calling for one-third reservation for women to be implemented before the 2029 elections without any alteration to the total number of seats.
Second Letter Follows Earlier Appeal in July
Notably, Kharge had earlier written to PM Modi on July 16 on the same matter. His latest letter comes in the context of remarks made by the Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister in an interview, hinting at the possibility of calling a special session of Parliament.
Rijiju’s Remarks on Reconvening Parliament Spark Concern
Minister Kiren Rijiju had stated in his interview that reconvening a session of Parliament after it had been adjourned was not without precedent, citing past instances of this having occurred. His remarks carry particular significance given that, despite the Monsoon Session’s proceedings concluding on August 13, Parliament has not yet been formally prorogued. Congress has expressed concern that the government could suddenly reconvene Parliament to introduce the delimitation bill without adequate consultation.
