Bhubaneswar: In a major anti-corruption operation, Odisha Vigilance Department on Thursday raided seven premises linked to Baikuntha Nath Sarangi, Chief Engineer of the Rural Development Department, and recovered ₹2.1 crore in cash from his Bhubaneswar flat. Sarangi is under investigation for allegedly amassing disproportionate assets beyond known sources of income.
Bundles of Cash Thrown from Window During Raid
As the vigilance team arrived at his PDN Exons Apartment flat in Dumduma, Bhubaneswar, Sarangi allegedly panicked and attempted to dispose of the money by throwing bundles of ₹500 notes out the window. However, the vigilant officers managed to recover all the cash in the presence of independent witnesses.
Seven Locations Targeted in Simultaneous Operation
Acting on a warrant from the Special Judge (Vigilance), Angul, the department conducted synchronized raids involving 8 DSPs, 12 Inspectors, 6 ASIs, and several staff members. The raids were carried out at the following locations:
A double-storey residential house in Karadagadia, Angul Flat C-102 in PDN Exons Apartment, Dumduma, Bhubaneswar A flat in Siula, Pipili (Puri) A relative’s house in Sikhyakapada, Angul Ancestral home in Lokeipasi village, Angul Another ancestral double-storey house in Matiasahi, Angul Sarangi’s office chamber at the Chief Engineer’s office, Bhubaneswar
The Vigilance Department is now verifying seized documents, properties, and assets for further investigation.
