Bhagalpur: A 35-year-old man identified as Sameer Ranjan was arrested within just four hours by police after sending a death threat to Prime Minister Narendra Modi via WhatsApp. The accused, a resident of Maheshi village in Sultanganj, Bhagalpur, has no prior criminal record and holds a BCA degree. He had worked for a private firm before becoming unemployed during the COVID-19 pandemic. During interrogation, he cited unemployment, financial distress, and mental stress as reasons behind his reckless act.

PMO Received Threat Message via WhatsApp

On May 29, the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) received a threatening message on WhatsApp, triggering immediate alerts at the National Investigation Agency (NIA), Intelligence Bureau (IB), and Union Home Ministry. Given the seriousness of the threat, the matter was handed over to Bhagalpur police for swift action.

Accused Traced Using Technology Despite VPN Use

A special team led by Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Hridaykant used technical analysis of call records, SIM registration data, and location tracking to zero in on the accused. Investigators found that Sameer used fake documents to procure the SIM and had routed the message using a VPN to obscure his location. The threat was made via WhatsApp call, further complicating traceability.

Police Investigation Continues

Authorities are currently interrogating Sameer to determine whether any larger conspiracy or external influence is involved. SSP Hridaykant confirmed that the police are probing all possible angles and will take necessary action based on findings.
