Kolkata: A medical test has confirmed the gang-rape allegation of a 24-year-old first-year student at South Calcutta Law College, revealing evidence of “forceful penetration, bite marks, and nail scratches” on her body. The shocking crime took place inside the college campus on June 25, adding to Kolkata’s growing concerns over women’s safety.

Prime Accused Is Practising Lawyer

According to the police, the survivor has named Monojit Mishra, an alumnus and practising criminal lawyer, as the main accused. Two senior students allegedly helped Mishra carry out the assault by standing guard outside the room during the crime. All three were arrested within 12 hours of the complaint and are in police custody.

Political Row Over Campus Safety

The case has sparked a fierce political war of words in West Bengal. While the ruling Trinamool Congress said “justice will be served”, TMC MP Kalyan Banerjee controversially asked what can be done if “a friend rapes a friend” and argued that changing mindsets is key to prevention. Critics have slammed such remarks, demanding stronger campus security and accountability.

Ongoing Investigation And Public Anger

Police have seized the mobile phones of the accused as they probe allegations that the assault was filmed and the survivor threatened with the footage. West Bengal Minister Shashi Panja assured the public of swift justice, but the incident has reignited debate about student safety and law enforcement on campuses.
