Washington DC: Confusion and panic gripped thousands of Indian professionals after US President Donald Trump announced a steep $100,000 H-1B visa fee for new applicants, with initial reports suggesting returning workers might also face the levy. Though the White House later clarified that re-entry fees wouldn’t apply to existing H-1B holders, many had already disrupted plans, missing weddings and family reunions.

Emotional Toll on Families

Stories poured in from across the globe as Indian tech workers scrambled to comply with abrupt company advisories to return to the US. A Reddit user shared how she cut short a rare visit home, leaving her mother in tears, while others abandoned long-awaited celebrations, including weddings, to avoid getting stranded. The lack of clear instructions from Washington amplified anxiety among workers caught mid-journey.

Uncertainty Clouds American Dream

Despite the later clarification, the fee hike for new H-1B applicants has raised doubts about the viability of pursuing careers in the US. Tech giants like Amazon and Microsoft urged employees to stay stateside until policies stabilize, while some travellers described the situation as a “travel ban in disguise.” For many Indians—the largest group on H-1B visas—the episode has deepened concerns over mounting unpredictability under Trump’s administration.
