New Delhi: Samajwadi Party (SP) president Akhilesh Yadav on Tuesday welcomed the release of senior party leader Azam Khan from Sitapur jail, calling it a “matter of relief and joy” not only for Khan’s family but for all who believe in justice. He also accused the BJP of framing the veteran leader in false cases for political vendetta.
Akhilesh Yadav Thanks Court, Attacks BJP
In a post on X, the former Uttar Pradesh chief minister said, “The release of the honorable Azam Khan ji is a matter of relief and joy not only for him and his family and all of us, but also for all those people who have faith in justice. Heartfelt thanks to the court for upholding faith in justice.” He alleged that those who filed “fake cases” against Khan have now realized that “every lie and every conspiracy has an expiry date.” Speaking to reporters, Yadav reiterated that no fresh false cases should be filed by the BJP government and vowed that a future SP government would withdraw all politically motivated cases against Khan.
Shivpal Yadav Defends Khan, Rejects BSP Speculation
SP leader Shivpal Singh Yadav, who came to receive Azam Khan, also accused the Yogi Adityanath-led government of framing him. “Azam Khan was framed by the government in false cases. However, the court has granted him bail and has provided relief. The Samajwadi Party stands beside him,” he said. Shivpal dismissed speculation of Khan joining the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), insisting the SP stands united with him.
Azam Khan’s Return After 23 Months
Azam Khan, a ten-time MLA from Rampur and former UP minister, was released after nearly 23 months in custody in connection with the Quality Bar land encroachment case and other charges. Police records list 111 criminal cases against him, but his lawyer claims many were politically motivated, with several withdrawn or pending trial. Large crowds of supporters, including his son Adeeb, gathered outside Sitapur jail to welcome him, prompting heavy security and drone surveillance.
