Lima: Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, during his visit to Latin America, met Colombian Senate President Lidios Garcia on Friday and addressed a seminar at EIA University in Medellín, Colombia, warning that India’s democratic structure is under attack.

Strengthening Diplomatic and Parliamentary Ties

According to a post by the Indian Overseas Congress on X, Rahul Gandhi also met Peruvian Congress members, including Foreign Affairs Commission Chair Heidi Lisbeth Juarez Calle, and members Marleny Portero and Digna Calle. During the meeting with Colombian Senate President Lidios Garcia, a parliamentary friendship group with Peru was announced to strengthen political, diplomatic, and commercial relations between the two countries.

The Congress party stated on social media that Rahul Gandhi visited Medellín’s Comuna Trece — once a center of violence but now a hub of art and culture. His Latin American tour is aimed at enhancing international dialogue and partnerships.

“Democracy Under Attack in India”

At EIA University, Rahul Gandhi addressed the seminar titled The Future is Today, where he declared that India is facing its “biggest threat” as its democratic framework is being undermined. He accused the government of enabling centralized corruption and claimed that three to four major business groups, closely linked to the Prime Minister, are dominating the economy.

Rahul Gandhi criticised demonetisation as a “failed policy” and said the Goods and Services Tax (GST) has devastated small businesses while benefiting large corporations. “Demonetisation and GST hurt the backbone of India’s economy. It destroyed small businesses and handed advantages to big companies,” he said.
