New Delhi: The BJP hit out at the Congress on Sunday after a comedian mimicked Prime Minister Narendra Modi while sharing the stage with Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi at his “Chhatron Ki Goonj” event in Indore, with senior party leaders accusing the Congress of stooping to new lows.
BJP Leaders Slam Congress Over Comedian’s Remarks
Union minister Kiren Rijiju took to social media platform X to say that the Congress had become “a party of comedians and jokers,” adding that the party was “out forever.” Union Education Minister Pralhad Joshi accused Rahul Gandhi and the Congress of reaching an “absolute nadir of moral bankruptcy,” alleging that using a student interaction to mock and insult the late mother of PM Modi reflected a shocking lack of basic empathy and political decorum. BJP leader C.R. Kesavan also criticised Rahul Gandhi, alleging that he shared the stage with individuals who mocked an elderly woman by referring to her as a “setting,” and accused the Congress leader of laughing along with the remarks. Kesavan further claimed that such conduct reflected an “uncouth culture” within the party and suggested it was among the reasons the Congress had struggled to connect with young people.
Comedian’s Mimicry Sparks the Row
The controversy arose after standup comedian Pulkit Mani shared the stage with Rahul Gandhi and mimicked PM Modi during the student-focused event. At the “Chhatron Ki Goonj” programme held in Indore on Saturday, Rahul Gandhi had launched a strong attack on the government over paper leak issues and various student grievances, saying the event was aimed at restoring the hope students had lost in the education system. He said he wanted students to once again believe in education and the system, describing curiosity, humility, honesty and fearlessness as qualities that define a true student, and argued that a genuine seeker of knowledge cannot be arrogant and must remain open to differing viewpoints. He added that students do not harbour hatred and instead treat one another with kindness and mutual respect.
Earlier Remarks on Modi’s Foreign Policy
This is not the first time Rahul Gandhi has targeted PM Modi at a public event — at a Congress programme in August, he had taken a swipe at the Prime Minister’s foreign policy approach, suggesting it relied too heavily on embracing foreign leaders.
