New Delhi: Satellite data has confirmed that the ash cloud from Ethiopia’s Hayli Gubbi volcanic eruption passed over Indian airspace at high altitudes without ever descending to ground-level concentrations. While the volcanic plume posed no direct danger, doctors warn that Delhi’s already hazardous pollution continues to trigger the same respiratory, skin and eye problems commonly associated with volcanic ash exposure.
Ash Stayed Aloft, Pollution on the Ground Is the Real Enemy
Experts explain that volcanic ash consists of ultrafine mineral particles that can deeply penetrate the lungs if present at ground level. However, meteorological models indicate that the plume travelled only at high altitudes over India and did not mix with Delhi’s breathing air. Despite this, the irritation, cough and breathing difficulty many experienced are a direct result of PM2.5 and PM10 pollution, not volcanic exposure. Delhi’s air quality remains in the “severe” category, making protective measures essential.
Doctors Recommend Immediate Respiratory Precautions
Pulmonologists advise residents to restrict outdoor movement during high-pollution hours, wear N95 or N99 masks instead of cloth or surgical masks, and avoid morning workouts when pollution peaks. Asthma and COPD patients must continue preventive inhalers and stay indoors during severe AQI periods. People are urged to stay hydrated and improve indoor air quality using HEPA purifiers, wet mopping, and sealed windows.
Skin and Eye Irritation Also Worsening Due to Smog
Dermatologists report increased cases of dryness, itching and allergic reactions linked to pollution. They advise gentle cleansing, frequent moisturisation with ceramide- or hyaluronic acid-based creams, and avoiding abrasive scrubs. Ophthalmologists recommend wrap-around sunglasses outdoors, preservative-free lubricating drops, and choosing eyeglasses over contact lenses on high-pollution days. Children, senior citizens, heart patients and pregnant women face the highest risk and require strict precautions.
