Ranchi: Ahead of Jharkhand’s municipal elections, internal dissent within the BJP has come into the open as former Dhanbad mayor and close aide of ex-chief minister Raghubar Das, Chandrashekhar Agarwal, joined the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) after being denied party support.
Joined JMM in Presence of CM Hemant Soren
Chandrashekhar Agarwal formally took membership of the JMM during the party’s foundation day in Dumka, in the presence of Chief Minister Hemant Soren. His switch has intensified political activity in Jharkhand, especially in the urban local body election context.
Denial of BJP Support Triggered Exit
Sources said the BJP decided to back state executive committee member Sanjeev Agarwal as its mayoral face in Dhanbad, sidelining Chandrashekhar Agarwal. Upset over the denial of support, he chose to sever ties with the BJP and align with the ruling party.
Political Implications for BJP and JMM
Chandrashekhar Agarwal has earlier staked claims for MP, MLA and mayoral posts on a BJP ticket, making his exit a significant setback for the party. The development is being seen as a political gain for the JMM, although the party has already extended its mayoral support in Dhanbad to Neelam Mishra.
