New Delhi: Panic buying of petrol and diesel has surged across several Indian states amid escalating Gulf war tensions, leading to long queues at fuel stations and “No Stock” signs in some areas despite government assurances of adequate supply.
Queues And Shortages Reported Across States
Reports from states including Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Assam, Tamil Nadu, and Telangana indicate a sharp rise in fuel demand as people rush to stock up. Long lines have formed at petrol pumps, creating operational challenges for both authorities and fuel station operators.
In several locations, excessive buying has led to temporary shortages, forcing some pumps to display “No Stock” boards.
Rumours Fuel Panic Despite Government Assurances
The Petroleum Ministry has repeatedly stated that there is no shortage of petrol or diesel in the country. However, rumours of a possible fuel crisis have triggered panic among citizens.
In Maharashtra’s Washim district, large crowds gathered at fuel stations, with people filling fuel worth ₹500 to ₹1,000 amid fears of depletion. Similar scenes were reported in Satara, Kolhapur, Sangli, Solapur, Pune, and Jalna.
Administration Warns Against Misinformation
Authorities in Uttar Pradesh districts such as Prayagraj, Gonda, Siddharthnagar, Hapur, and Deoria have urged citizens not to believe in rumours. In Madhya Pradesh, viral videos about fuel shortages sparked panic buying, especially in Indore.
Officials have warned of strict action, including FIRs, against those spreading misinformation. Meanwhile, cities like Hyderabad and Chennai are also witnessing increased queues at fuel stations.
