Ranchi: The Jharkhand High Court has directed the state government to form a three-member committee to monitor open jails and improve facilities for inmates, in line with directions issued earlier by the Supreme Court.

Committee to Be Led by Home Secretary

A division bench led by Chief Justice M. S. Sonak and Justice Rajesh Shankar ordered that the panel be headed by the Home Secretary.

The committee will also include the Inspector General of Prisons and the superintendent of the concerned open jail.

Status Report Sought

The court asked the state government to submit a status report on the formation of the committee during the next hearing scheduled for June 11.

Focus on Better Facilities

The monitoring panel is expected to review and improve facilities in open jails, including gym access, healthcare, food quality, and rehabilitation measures aimed at helping inmates reintegrate into mainstream society.

Based on Supreme Court Directions

The matter was taken up suo motu by the High Court after the Supreme Court asked all states to create oversight mechanisms for open prisons and ensure better living conditions for eligible prisoners.
