New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi said India’s Parliament is close to creating a new chapter in history while addressing the Nari Shakti Vandan Conference at Vigyan Bhavan in Delhi.
Focus on Women’s Representation
The Prime Minister said the need for reservation for women in democratic institutions has been felt for decades. He noted that discussions on the issue have continued for nearly 40 years across parties and generations.
He added that Parliament would hold detailed discussions on the matter from April 16.
A Major Decision for the 21st Century
Modi described the upcoming move as one of the most significant decisions of the 21st century and said it would be dedicated to women’s empowerment.
He said the time had come to end decades of waiting for stronger representation of women in state assemblies and Parliament.
Government Schemes Highlighted
During the speech, the Prime Minister also referred to initiatives aimed at expanding women’s participation in the economy.
He said millions of women opened bank accounts under the Jan Dhan Yojana, while more than 60 percent of loans under the Mudra scheme have gone to women borrowers.
He also said over 42 percent of registered startups in India have at least one woman director.
Reference to 2023 Law
Modi recalled that the Nari Shakti Vandan Act passed unanimously in 2023 with support from all political parties. He said there was broad agreement that it should be implemented by 2029.
Conference Held in Delhi
The event brought together women from different sectors and focused on increasing women’s participation in building a developed India, including greater representation in legislatures.
