New Delhi: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s scheduled visit to West Bengal on April 23 has reportedly been cancelled after permission was not granted by the local administration. The Congress has strongly criticised the ruling Trinamool Congress over the development.

Congress Alleges Administrative Blockade
According to party sources, Rahul Gandhi was expected to travel to Kolkata for election campaigning. Congress leaders alleged that the state administration, especially the police, did not grant permission for the programme despite waiting until Tuesday evening.

The party said the delay made it impossible to complete preparations for the scheduled visit.

Fresh Request Likely
Congress sources said Rahul Gandhi remains keen to campaign in the state. The party is now expected to submit a fresh application seeking administrative approval for a visit on April 25 or 26.

Political Tensions Rise
The issue comes shortly after Rahul Gandhi sharply criticised the Mamata Banerjee government during a recent rally in Bengal. His remarks had reportedly caused discomfort within the Trinamool Congress.

The cancellation has added to the growing political tension between Congress and TMC ahead of the state election.

Election Schedule in Bengal
As per the election schedule, voting for the first phase of the West Bengal Assembly election will take place on April 23 across 152 constituencies. The second phase will be held on April 29 for 142 seats.

Results for the 294-member assembly are scheduled to be announced on May 4.
