Kolkata: A special team of Kolkata Police visited Shantiniketam, the residence of TMC General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee on Harish Mukherjee Road on Monday, following a notice issued by the Kolkata Municipal Corporation over alleged illegal construction at the premises.
Why Police Visited
The KMC had issued a notice regarding illegal construction at Shantiniketam, with a seven-day deadline that expired on Monday. Sources indicate that an order has been issued to demolish the unauthorised portion of the building, and the police visit was to assess the situation in light of this notice.
Abhishek Seeks 14 More Days
A day earlier, Abhishek Banerjee had submitted an application to KMC officials seeking a 14-day extension in response to the notice. Whether the KMC has granted this extension has not been confirmed yet. Kolkata Mayor and TMC MLA Firhad Hakim told reporters he had no information about the notice.
17 Properties Under Scanner
According to the KMC, 17 properties linked to Abhishek Banerjee, his company, and his family are currently under investigation for alleged construction rule violations. Notices have been pasted at all 17 addresses under Section 400(1) of the KMC Act, 1980. The KMC’s assessment department had earlier prepared a list of 42 properties associated with Banerjee, which was subsequently narrowed down to 17 after scrutiny.
