Ranchi: The Jharkhand High Court heard a suo motu public interest litigation related to the premature release of convicts serving life imprisonment in the state, during which the state government filed an affidavit informing the court of decisions taken at the State Sentence Review Board’s meeting held on July 30.
26 Convicts Granted Premature Release
The government informed the court that 26 convicts had been granted premature release during the July 30 meeting, and confirmed that the State Sentence Review Board’s meetings were being held within the mandated three-month timeframe, with the next meeting scheduled to take place three months from now.
Court Directs Government to File Status Report on Next Meeting
The court directed the government to keep it informed of decisions taken during the upcoming meeting and to file a corresponding status report. The next hearing in the case has been fixed for November 19. Advocate Shubham Mishra represented JHALSA, while senior advocate Amit Kumar Das appeared on behalf of the High Court.
Supreme Court Mandate on Quarterly Board Meetings
The Supreme Court has directed states to ensure that State Sentence Review Board meetings are held on a timely basis, with a mandate for the board to meet once every three months. In line with this directive, the Jharkhand High Court continues to monitor compliance through the ongoing public interest litigation.
