Ranchi: The Jharkhand High Court has expressed strong displeasure over the CBI’s slow handling of trials involving MPs and MLAs, remarking that the agency spends all its time collecting documents and shows no urgency in producing witnesses during trial.

Alkatra Scam Trial Drags On: 12 of 32 Accused Dead

Justice Rangon Mukhopadhyay’s bench heard the matter. The court’s anger followed information that in the Alkatra (coal tar) scam of undivided Bihar, 12 of the 32 accused have died during the trial, while the trial against the rest is still continuing. The scam took place in 1997, and after investigating it the CBI filed a chargesheet against 32 accused, including the then minister Ilyas Hussain.

Court Orders Records of Two of 11 Pending Cases

The court ordered the records of two of the 11 pending MP/MLA cases to be summoned from the trial court. The Supreme Court has directed speedy disposal of cases against MPs and MLAs, but many such cases in the state are still at the trial stage. The CBI told the court that witnesses in several MP/MLA cases cannot be found at their addresses.
