The Supreme Court on Monday granted four months’ time to Tamil Nadu state election commission to complete the election process of urban local bodies in the state. The Bench of Chief Justice of India NV Ramana, Justice Surya Kant and Justice Hima Kohli rejected the plea submitted by the state election commission’s demanding seven months’ time for the completion of the election process of urban body election.

The Court asked the State Election Commission to complete the entire process of election within four months. Notably, the State Election Commission filed an application in the matter filed by S Shankar, who had filed a PIL( Public Interest Litigation) for conducting local body polls.

Mukul Rohatgi, advocate appearing for the State Election Commission, submitted that at least seven months are required for the election and as per the prepared schedule it will be completed till April 2022. The COVID-19 issue and the merger of certain municipalities by the new government had made it complex hence seven months of time is required. But the court rejected the plea and asked to complete the election process in four months.
