Dhanbad, Oct 2: Jharkhand is all set to regain its 300 MBBS seats in the current academic session 2021-22 as National Medical Commission (NMC) has lifted the ban from admission in three medical colleges in Dumka, Hazaribagh, and Palamu. Phulo Jhano Medical College Dumka  has received a letter from NMC for admission for 100 MBBS seats in 2021-22 sessions. The other two medical colleges of the state, Medinirai Medical College Palamu and Sheikh Bhikhari Medical College Hazaribagh are yet to receive the letter.

NMC had imposed a ban on admission in these three medical colleges in 2020-21 sessions due to deficiencies of faculty members and infrastructure required for 100 MBBS seats.  Interestingly, these colleges were inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2019.

Dumka Medical College’s principal, Dr Arun Kumar admitted to have received the NMC letter in this regard on Friday. “Permission for admission has been given and now the main challenge before us is to comply with the deficiencies of  75% teachers, 100%  tutors, senior residents and infrastructure in the institution before admission,” he said.

According to Dr. Kumar, NMC has lifted the embargo on the basis of an affidavit given by him on a stamp paper in April 2021 to comply with all the deficiencies pointed out by the Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB) of NMC.
“ Of course deficiencies exist in the institution but we hope all shortcomings would be plugged before starting of admission,” he said.

Palamu medical college’s principal, Dr Shailendra Kumar said he also gave an undertaking but has not received any letter over the lifting the ban till date. “ We expect to get the letter on October 4 as the office is closed for two days due to Gandhi Jayanti ( October 2)  today followed by Sunday,” he said.

Hazaribagh Medical College’s principal Dr SK Singh is also yet to receive an NMC letter regarding the lifting of the ban on admission.

The lifting of the ban on admission by NMC has also rekindled the fate of the first batch 300 MBBS students admitted to these medical colleges in 2019. These students feared that their degree might be de-recognized following the embargo on admissions.

Following the permission to these newly set up medical colleges, Shahid Nirmal Mahto medical College  Hospital (SNMMCH) Dhanbad is also hopeful to regain its 50 MBBS seats withdrawn by the then Medical Council of India (MCI) in 2016-17 sessions.
