Ranchi, Oct.11: Seven cheques issued in the name of Life Insurance Corporation (LIC) of India ( from December 19, 2017 to October 20, 2020 on regular interval for payment of quarterly premium against four insurance policies running in the name of Zahid Durrani but reason best known to the insurance company, three policies are running while one has become dormant incurring a loss of approximately Rs 2 lakh to the policyholder.
The fact came to fore when agent, Sobhnath Mahto, who had sold the policies to Zahid, died and Zahind’s father, Alimuddin Durrani, a retired Dy SP of Anti Corruption Bureau (ACB), Jharkhand, went himself to deposit the premium amount through cheque and was taken aback after irregularities came into this knowledge.
“I was taken aback when I was told that one policy 557659080 of the quarterly premium amount of Rs 14425 is not running as its premium has not been paid since 2017 and for its renewal premium with fine is required to be paid,” retired ACB Dy SP Alimuddin said.
“When I asked how it can be possible when three other policies including 557660680, 557660681 and 557660682 are running though its premium was also paid through the same cheques which were issued for the payment of premium of policy number 557659080, no one could give a proper reply. I also asked where did the amount paid against the dormant policy go but again no one could give a proper reply,” Alimuddin further said talking to Lagatar24.com.
Asked about the action he has taken, retired Dy SP Alumuddin, said a written complaint was given in this connection on June 20 this year but so far no proper reply has come.
Retired Dy SP Alimuddin smells a rat in this act. “I see a high-level fraud in the matter as LIC as my son did not even get any information regarding discontinuation of premium through LIC office has every detail for communication. Someone told me that the agent might have used the amount equal to the premium of dormant policy to pay a premium of another policy but an insider told me that LIC does not accept a cheque for payment of premium of the policy if it was not issued in the name of the cheque issuer or anyone very much close to the cheque issuer,” he said.
The agent was associated with Indira Palace, Hinoo branch of LIC. An insider there said though the agent was good with morale, similar complaints taking the policies sold by him have come to the LIC office after his death.
“The case is in discussion and the matter is being probed internally. This is a peculiar case,” the insider said.
