Dumka, Oct 18: At least two persons, including a woman have died and other five have been undergoing treatment at the Phulo Jhano Medical College and Hospital (PJMCH) here after they developed symptoms of food poisoning.
All the victims, including the deceased namely Maku Hembrom (35) and Sushil Hembrom (43) of the village Mirja Tola of Gadikoraiya Panchayat under Muffassil police station of the district had gone for revelling a rural fair in the nearby village on Sunday which is traditionally organised to mark the culmination of the Durga Puja festival where they consumed spurious food.
Those still undergoing treatment include Matla Hembrom, his son Sushil Hembrom and daughter in-law Biti Murmu, Marshall Murmu and Manjhi Hembrom whose conditions, according to the superintendent of the PJMCH Dr Ravindra Kumar, are stable.
“All the five victims of the food poisoning were admitted to the PJMCH on Monday morning after their condition deteriorated,” Dr Kumar said feigning ignorance of the deaths of two other villagers who had succumbed to the ailment late evening on Sunday itself.
Villagers, meanwhile, said that the condition of both the deceased deteriorated after they were administered medication by a quack as they had started developing symptoms of food poisoning and vomiting and died even before they could be shifted to the hospital.
The incident, on the other hand, is also believed to have been caused by the consumption of spurious liquor in the rural fair where homemade liquor is sold openly to the revellers including women.
