Ranchi, Oct.30: As many as 14 packets of vaccine containing 14000 doses charred as fire broke out at a community health centre (CHC) at Arki, about 70km from Jharkhand capital in Khunti district.

It was getting 6 am when the incident took place due to a short circuit. As the nearest fire station is about 35km from the CHC, firefighters could not reach on time. Nurses and locality residents played their role in fire fighting.

Superintendent of police of the district, Ashutosh Shekhar, confirmed the incident saying the cold storage where vaccines were kept was the most affected area due to fire. “Nurses could save 3000 doses while the vaccines kept in 14 packets were charred,” Shekhar said.

A locality resident said three deep freezers in which vaccines were kept were charred. “Deep freezers blasted and its sound could be heard from far,” the resident said.
