New Delhi, Nov.20: PV Sindhu, the two-time Olympic medalist, was eliminated from the Indonesia Masters Super 750 badminton competition on Saturday after losing in consecutive games to Japanese top seed Akane Yamaguchi.
Sindhu had a better 12-7 head-to-head record versus the Japanese shuttler going into Friday’s match, having won both of their encounters this year, but she was no match for her opponent, falling 13-21 9-21 in a one-sided contest that lasted only 32 minutes. Sindhu, who was seeded third, was not at her best in both games and trailed her Japanese opponent from the start.
Sindhu had a small lead in the second game but Yamaguchi outclassed her opponent throughout to win the match.
The winner of the other semifinal between fourth seed An Seyoung and Thailand’s Phittayaporn Chaiwan will face the Japanese.
Kidambi Srikanth, who will play third seed Anders Antonsen of Denmark in the men’s singles quarterfinals later today, is India’s only hope in the tournament.
