CUJ observes International Day of Persons with Disabilities

A webinar on ‘Disability Empowerment, Media and Academic Intervention’ was organized on the occasion.

Ranchi, Dec.4: Central University of Jharkhand (CUJ) organized a webinar on ‘Disability Empowerment, Media and Academic Intervention’ to observe International Day of Persons with Disabilities. The webinar was conducted on Friday in collaboration with Ali Yavar Jung National Institute of Speech and Hearing Disabilities (Divyangjan), Mumbai.

The session was joined by participants encompassing faculties, research scholars, professionals and students from multiple disciplines and Universities.

Prof. Anil Aneja; Head, Department of English, DU, National Award Winner for Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (2014) and Dr. P. J. Mathew Martin, ESA (Mass Media), Department of Outreach and Extension Services, Ali Yavar Jung National Institute of Speech and Hearing Disabilities, Mumbai; Adjunct Faculty, Department of Media Studies, Mumbai were the eminent speakers in this virtual event.

Prof. Aneja elucidated the purpose behind the inception of the day in his keynote speech on ‘From Rights to Empowerment: Disability Movement and its Challenges.’

“The day is not just an occasion for celebration or charity but to retrospect the blood, sweat and tears poured to make this day come into an existence,” he said.

 

 

Dr. P.J. Mathew Martin threw light on various issues including barriers in accessing the information, resources and other services by the disabled people, laws and norms made for their welfare, etc during his session on “Media and Accessibility”.

Addressing the participants, he said that the information, education and other facilities must be provided to the persons with disabilities in an accessible and acceptable format.

Prof. Aneja in another session talked about ‘Interrogating Disability in Literature’ wherein he provided insights into the classic and modern texts covering physical, mental or intellectual disabilities in one way or the other.

The webinar was coordinated by Dr.Sudarshan Yadav, Assistant Professor, Department of Mass Communication, CUJ, with an assistance of Dr. Raj Bahadur Singh, Prashant Singh, Pushpa, Dr. Hrishikesh Mahato, Dr. Seema Mamta Minz, Dr. Nitesh Bhatia, Dr. Amrit Kumar, Dr. Nagapawan Chintalpati, Dr. Mahendra Singh, Dr. Naresh Burla and Mr. Abdul Halim, Deputy Registrar.

Besides, the webinar was also presided by Prof. R.K. Dey, Honorable Vice Chancellor (In charge), Dr. Vimal Kishor, Dean, School of Mass Communication and Media Technologies, and Prof. Dev Vrat Singh, Convener, Equal Opportunity Cell.
