Meerut, Dec.4: 13 of the almost 300 international travellers who arrived in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh, gave the administration incorrect contact information, according to the district’s top medical officer, who added that efforts are on to trace them.

Meerut’s Chief Medical Officer, Akhilesh Mohan, claimed that officials have been dispatched to their homes to identify them and conduct testing. If these houses are not found, information will be handed to the local intelligence unit to assist in their search, according to the official.

“Thirteen out of 297 foreign returnees have given wrong mobile numbers and addresses to the administration. The details that they provided to us have been given to LIU (Local Intelligence Unit) to find out their whereabouts,” Meerut CMO Dr Akhilesh Mohan was quoted as saying by news agency ANI.

Dr. Mohan went on to say that seven of the 297 passengers had returned from South Africa, which was the first country to report the Omicron variant, which has led many countries, including India, to change their travel policies. However, the doctor did not say whether any of the missing travellers were from ‘at risk’ countries.

Several reports have surfaced of foreign nationals being untraceable after arriving in India.

State officials in Karnataka are attempting to locate ten more people who purportedly went missing from the airport. A 66-year-old South African national who was determined to be Omicron-infected is also being sought by the southern state.

India reported its first two instances of the Omicron coronavirus type on Thursday. However, the administration said it had no immediate plans to authorise booster vaccine injections despite its demands.
