Brisbane, Dec 10: England skipper Joe Root on Friday broke the record of past former skipper Michael Vaughan after smashing most test runs by a England player in a calendar year. Root created this record on day three of the first Ashes Test against Australia on Friday.

Notably, Vaughan scored 1,481 runs at an average of 61.14 back in 2002, including six centuries and two half-centuries. Root came close to break this record when he hit 1477 in 2018. The England skipper  finally surpassed Vaughan as he scored a classy half-century in the first Test.

He also managed to score 426 runs in two Tests against Sri Lanka, and 386 runs in the four-match series in India. At home, Root made 97 runs in two matches against New Zealand followed by amassing 564 in four Tests against India.

In the ongoing series, England’s score read 220/2, trailing by 58 runs. Malan and Root have played unbeaten knocks of 80 and 86 runs respectively.
