New Delhi, Dec.14: Netflix has cut the cost of its streaming services in India on Tuesday for the first time since entering in the South Asian country five years ago, as it seeks to compete more effectively with tough competitors Disney and Amazon.

In a blog post, the streaming giant announced that its basic plan, which allows customers to access content on a single device, has been reduced by 60% to 199 per month.

The cost of its mobile-only plan will drop by a quarter to 149 dollars, with overall plan costs reducing by 18 percent to 60%.

Netflix declared in its statement that the increased fees were the “real Money Heist” referring to one of its popular television series, but without providing any explanation.

Netflix has long outpriced its Indian competitors, such as Disney and Amazon, citing the substantially higher income of English-speaking households that watch English-language entertainment.

Disney + Hotstar offers a yearly premium subscription that includes access to all of their content in 4K for Rs.1,499.

Disney + Hotstar accounted for just under 40% of Disney+’s overall subscriber base of 116 million, according to the company’s earnings call this year. Netflix and Amazon, on the other hand, do not reveal their numbers by country.
