New Delhi, Jan 12: India reported 1,94,720 new Covid-19 cases, up 15.8% over yesterday’s 1.68 lakh instances in the last 24 hours. According to government data released this morning, the daily positivity rate – or the number of people infected per 100 tests – is 11.5 percent.

So far, 4,868 cases of Omicron infection, a highly transmissible coronavirus variation first discovered in South Africa, have been documented in the country. With 1,281 incidents, Maharashtra leads the way, followed by Rajasthan with 645 cases.

In addition, 165 deaths have been reported in the country in the last 24 hours, bringing the total number of deaths to 4,84,378.

Since the beginning of vaccination drive, India has administered over 153 crore vaccine doses, marking a landmark milestone in the fight against Covid-19.

In the third wave of the pandemic, at least 120 districts in 29 states and union territories reported a weekly positive rate of 10%.

Covid-19 instances are on the increasing in countries all around the world, not just in India. The growth of the Omicron form is pushing Covid-19 toward becoming an endemic disease that humans can live with, according to the EU’s drug watchdog, though it remains a pandemic for the time being.

Meanwhile, the WHO has warned against classifying Covid-19 as an endemic infection like flu rather than a pandemic, claiming that the Omicron variant’s transmission has not yet stabilised.
