Ranchi, Feb 14: RIMS is going to experience its first minimally invasive heart surgery as an expert Dr Vineet Mahajan, Cardiothoracic and Transplant surgeon from AIIMS-Bhopal has recently joined the institution with an aim to uplift the standard of heart surgery in the state.

During an exclusive interview with lagatar24.com at RIMS, Mahajan said that he has joined RIMS to take the heart surgery to next level by introducing minimally invasive heart surgery which will not only reduce the time of surgery but at the same time will ensure faster recovery of the patients.

“Minimally invasive heart surgery involves making small incisions in the chest to reach the heart between the ribs, rather than cutting through the breastbone, as is done in open-heart surgery. It is a complex surgical procedure that requires training and experience,” Mahajan said.

“The potential benefits of minimally invasive heart surgery when compared with open-heart surgery can include less blood loss, lower risk of infection, reduced trauma and pain, shorter time in the hospital, faster recovery and quicker return to normal activities and smaller and less noticeable scar,” Mahajan added.

“At present, the facility is only available in metropolitan hospitals but is now going to be available in Jharkhand also,” Mahajan further said.

On the question of whether all the equipment in the CTVS department is up to the mark, he said that it has been very few days to know about the place in detail. “I am going to perform a surgery tomorrow which will help me gain more knowledge of the types of equipment that RIMS holds,” he said.

Dr. Vineet Mahajan completed his MBBS from Government Medical College, the University of Jammu in 1998. He has served in Narayana Institute of Cardiac Sciences, Bengaluru and All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Bhopal before joining RIMS.

CTVS was started at RIMS in 2012 but many doctors who had joined the department left the institute due to infrastructural shortcomings.

In 2017, Dr. Rakesh Choudhary and Dr. Anshul Kumar joined as a faculty after which the operation theatre was commissioned in October 2018 which opened the doors for vascular surgeries in the department.

However, the first open-heart surgery was conducted in February 2019 when doctors of CTVS along with the assistance of two experts from PGI Chandigarh conducted the first open-heart surgery.
