New Delhi, Feb 26: Russia has vetoed a draft UN Security Council resolution condemning Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine and calling for its soldiers to leave immediately.
China, India, and the United Arab Emirates did not vote on the wording produced by the United States. The remaining 11 members of the council voted in favour.
Vassily Nebenzia, Russia’s UN Ambassador, praised Security Council members who voted against the measure, which he regarded as anti-Russian.
“Your draft resolution is nothing other than yet another brutal, inhumane move in this Ukrainian chessboard,” Nebenzia said.
Following the vote, US Ambassador to the United Nations Linda Thomas-Greenfield chastised Moscow for abusing its influence to attack and subvert the UN.
“Russia, you can veto this resolution, but you cannot veto our voices, you cannot veto the truth, you cannot veto our principles, you cannot veto the Ukrainian people,” she said.
The draft Security Council resolution condemned Russia’s “aggression against Ukraine” and demanded that Russia “immediately cease its use of force against Ukraine” and “immediately, completely, and unconditionally withdraw all of its military forces from Ukraine’s territory within internationally recognised borders.”
In addition, the draft asked that Russia withdraw its recognition of two rebel entities in eastern Ukraine as sovereign states.
