Jamshedpur, Mar 11: Police have taken a 26-year-old youth in custody after bodies of a 40-year-old man identified as Raju Mahanty and his elderly father were found lying under a blanket at their house in a slum under suburban Bagbera thana area on Friday morning.

Police maintain that Raju Mahanty was strangulated to death suspected by a tenant Jiten Kumar in the sequel to an illicit relation with the murder victim’s wife Deepa Devi.

The police are, however, not sure whether the elderly man identified as Sushil Mahanty has also been murdered.

The bodies have been shifted to MGM Medical College mortuary for postmortem. The police said after autopsy of the body of senior Mahanty only that it can be ascertained whether he too was strangulated.

Senior SP, M Tamil Vanan and SP (City) Subhash Chandra Jat inspected the crime scene at Gandhi Nagar, the densely-populated slum where the sensational double deaths took place.

The woman with whom the tenant had illicit affair is a 35-year-old mother of four children.

According to sources, Raju Mahanty who had a dubious background of selling marijuana had given a portion of his house on rent to Jiten Kumar a couple of months ago during which the latter had developed illicit relations with his wife.

Revealing about the incident, City SP said that from the preliminary investigation it was found that the murder of Raju Mahanty is the result of an illicit relationship between a tenant and the murder victim’s wife.

“There was ligature mark in the neck of Raju Mahanty. Based on circumstantial evidence and statement of the children as well as the neighbours, we have taken the tenant into custody, ” said Jat.

The senior police officer pointed out Raju Mahanty’s widow is also being interrogated and is likely to be taken into custody.

Jat said the mystery behind the way both the father and son died is yet to be completely unravelled, adding that interrogation of the suspects is on.
