Kyiv, March 13: On Twitter, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy claimed that he had spoken with Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett about the chances for peace talks with Russia. In his tweet, Zelenskyy also stated that he had requested Bennett for assistance in rescuing the mayor of Melitopol, who Ukraine claims was kidnapped by Russian forces.

“Continued dialogue with Israel PM @naftalibennett. We talked about russian aggression and the prospects for peace talks. We must stop repressions against civilians: asked to assist in the release of the captive mayor of Melitopol and local public figures,” he tweeted.

Earlier, Zelenskyy met with German chancellor Olaf Scholz and French President Emmanuel Macron to express gratitude for their assistance in the release of Melitopol mayor Ivan Fedorov.

On Saturday, Zelenskyy said that Russia had killed 1,300 soldiers. According to The Kyiv Independent, this is the first time the President has addressed Ukraine’s estimated military deaths. Ukraine’s armed forces estimate that approximately 12,000 Russians have died as a result of the conflict.

Meanwhile, the United States and other Western countries have slapped broad sanctions on Russia. After the people’s republics of Donetsk and Luhansk requested assistance in defending themselves, Russia initiated a military incursion in Ukraine on February 24.
