New Delhi, Mar 24: The Karkardooma Court in Delhi today denied bail to former JNU student activist Umar Khalid in the Northeast Delhi riot case.
On March 3, Additional Sessions Judge Amitabh Rawat had reserved the order after hearing arguments from both Khalid’s and the prosecution’s attorneys.
During the proceedings, the accused stated that the prosecution lacked the evidence necessary to prove its case against him.
Umar Khalid has been detained since September 2020 and is being housed in Tihar jail in Delhi. He is accused of being the masterminds of the February 2020 riots, which left 53 people dead and over 700 injured, under the anti-terror law Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.
The unrest erupted during demonstrations against the Citizenship and Immigration Act (CAA) and the National Register of Citizens (NRC).
In addition to Umar Khalid, activist Khalid Saifi, JNU students Natasha Narwal and Devangana Kalita, Jamia Coordination Committee members Safoora Zargar, former AAP councillor Tahir Hussain, and others have been charged under the law.
