Ranchi, April 5: The administration of the Birla Institute of Technology (BIT) Mesra in Ranchi has refused to accept the demand of the students to hold their online examination. The BIT has categorically told students that any agitation to demand the online examination will be considered an undisciplined behaviour.

Notably, on Friday students on the campus resorted to peaceful agitation after BIT issued notification to hold semester examinations offline from April 25.

Later on, the students postponed agitation as they were assured that the VC of BIT will meet them in an open session to know their concerns. On their assurance, the students postponed agitation and they returned to their classes.

Later on, the VC met around 300 students in an open session where he said that after Covid-19 offline classes were resumed hence the examinations should be held offline. However, students claimed that during online classes they were overloaded with course materials beyond prescribed limits and it was impossible to cover the entire syllabus. They said that it was not possible for them to do a revision of study materials in the form of over thousands of slides and PowerPoints.

But the BIT administration rejected their contention and said that students should better prepare for offline examination. They were cautioned to focus on their study rather than on such agitations.

After the lockdown due to the Covid-19, their classes were held online. Last month their offline classes were resumed and the students are now returning to campus. In between, BIT announced holding their offline examination from April 25. Students demanded that since their classes were held online the examination should also be taken online.  They said that Banaras Hindu University, IIT, and ISM Dhanbad also have announced plans to hold examinations online.

To press for their demand students refused to attend their classes and labs remained vacant till the BIT administration kindly considered their demand.
