New Delhi, April 33: The Delhi High Court issued a notice to the Delhi Police on Friday in response to an appeal filed by Umar Khalid, a former student leader at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), challenging a trial court order that denied his bail application in a larger conspiracy case involving violence in North East Delhi.

Umar Khalid is a suspect in a broader conspiracy case involving violence in northeast Delhi. On September 13, 2020, he was detained for violating numerous sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA).

On Friday, Justice Siddharth Mridul and Justice Rajnish Bhatnagar of the Division Bench of the Supreme Court of India sought a response from the investigative agency and set the subject for April 27, 2022.

“Did shaheed Bhagat Singh and Mahatma Gandhi ever use this language?” the Court queried after hearing the relevant portion of Umar Khalid’s speech. “We have no objections to free speech, but what exactly are you saying? All of this is unpleasant and offensive.”

Earlier, on March 24, 2022, the Trial Court denied Umar Khalid’s bail application. While dismissing the bail application, the trial court judge stated that there are reasonable grounds to believe that the charges against Umar Khalid are prima facie accurate. The case pertains to large-scale violence in Northeast Delhi in which 53 people had lost their lives and hundreds were injured.
