Alwar, April 22: A 300-year-old Shiva temple was demolished in Sarai Mohalla in the Alwar district of Rajasthan on Friday. A complaint was filed against the nagar panchayat’s executive officer (EO), the Sub Divisional Magistrate (SDM), and the municipality’s Rajgarh MLA.

Sharing a video of the incident on Twitter, BJP leader Amit Malviya tweeted, “Shedding tears on Karauli and Jahangirpuri and hurting the faith of Hindus — this is the secularism of Congress.”

Notably, a video of Congress MLA Johri Lal Meena has surfaced in which he is heard suggesting that the bulldozer would not have run if Congress had a board. People are associating the MLA’s statement with the temple’s demolition. In Rajgarh, there is now a BJP board. In the meantime, Hindu organisations have filed a complaint. Malviya went on to say that on April 18, the authorities used bulldozers to demolish the homes of 85 Hindus without warning. Rajasthan minister also expressed concern over the incident.

“I’m sorry to say, it has become a fashion; issues are made in the name of temples now. We respect temples, we’re more religious than people from BJP… We don’t use religion for vote bank,” said Rajasthan Minister Mahesh Joshi.

Meanwhile, BJP constituted a five member committee for the investigation of the incident.

“I have constituted a 5-member committee for the factual investigation of the Rajgarh (Alwar) temple case. This committee will go to the spot, prepare a factual report and submit the report to me,” said BJP Rajasthan president Dr Satish Poonia.
