New Delhi, May 8: A day after the price of a liquefied petroleum gas cylinder was raised by Rs 50, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Sunday compared LPG costs during the UPA’s era to those under the current BJP government.

The increase in LPG pricing has sparked outrage among opposition parties, with the Trinamool Congress criticising the increase and the Indian Youth Congress staging a protest outside the home of Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas Hardeep Singh Puri.

Rahul Gandhi said on Twitter that the price of LPG during the UPA administration was Rs 410, with a subsidy of Rs 827, however it costs Rs 999 during the NDA administration with no subsidy. Further, the Congress leader poked fun at the Centre, claiming that two cylinders were available for the price of one at the time.

“2 cylinders then for the price of 1 now! Only Congress governs for the welfare of poor & middle-class Indian families. It’s the core of our economic policy,” he tweeted.

The price of a cylinder of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) has been hiked by Rs 50. Domestic LPG cylinders will cost Rs 999.50 in Delhi after the recent hike. The price of commercial LPG cylinders was raised earlier this month. The price of a 19-kilogram commercial LPG cylinder was raised by Rs 102.50 to Rs 2355.50 on May 1.
