Jharkhand cadre IAS officer Rajiv Kumar appointed as next Chief Election Commissioner, to take charge on May 15

New Delhi, May 12: Rajiv Kumar will take over as the new chief election commissioner on Sunday (May 15). He takes over as the poll body’s president from Sushil Chandra. Chandra’s term ends on Saturday, according to his appointment letter.

“In pursuance of clause (2) of article 324 of the Constitution, the President is pleased to appoint Shri Rajiv Kumar as the Chief Election Commissioner with effect from the 15th May, 2022. My best wishes to Shri Rajiv Kumar. (sic),” tweeted union law minister Kiren Rijiju.

Notably, Rajiv Kumar is an Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer from the 1984 batch. According to a government release, he has worked in different ministries at the centre and his state cadre of Bihar and Jharkhand.

The 62-year-old officer is having extensive work experience throughout the social sector, environment and forests, human resources, finance and banking sector. In February 2020, he stepped down as Finance Secretary. He was then appointed chairman of the public enterprises selection board, which he will hold until August 31, 2020.
